Platted in 1847, Lockerbie Square is one of America’s pre-eminent examples of Victorian restorations and exciting contemporary architecture blending in the shadow of downtown Indianapolis.
As was the case in many American metropolitan neighborhoods in the 1960s, Lockerbie became a casualty of urban blight. The neighborhood’s fortunes changed in the early 1970s. Since then, a dedicated group of “urban pioneers” has led the restoration of beautiful Victorian houses and craftsman cottages, boosted by Lockerbie Square’s addition to the National Register of Historic Places. Vacant lots were filled with historic homes relocated from other endangered locations, or award-winning "in-fill" construction carefully designed to blend with the neighborhood's Victorian ambiance.
Lockerbie Square is within two blocks of the vibrant Massachusetts Avenue Arts and Theater District, home to a wide variety of performance arts venues, excellent independently owned restaurants, and unique shops and galleries.
A visit to Lockerbie Square is a step back in time with a look toward the future. For more information about Lockerbie Square and the Massachusetts Avenue Arts and Theatre District, visit:
